Viticulture and Enology Research
Programs in the United States
National Programs
National Grape and Wine Initiative
The NGWI is a national alliance drawn from all facets of the grape and wine sector, seeking to promote sustained growth through significantly increased expenditure on research and extension activities.
American Vineyard Foundation
The American Vineyard Foundation (AVF) is a California corporation organized in 1978 by the American Society of Enology and Viticulture as a vehicle to raise funds for research in viticulture and enology.
The Viticulture Consortium
The University of California (UC), Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR)—in cooperation with the national viticultural industry, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Cornell University—formed a Viticulture Consortium (VC) in 1996 to promote research and extension education that will assist the viticulture industry in remaining competitive. UC administers the Viticulture Consortium West (VCW), and Cornell University administers the Viticulture Consortium East (VCE).
The Viticulture Consortium is funded by the USDA Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (CSREES) to supplement and encourage the viticulture industry to continue to provide industry funding for research and extension education. Coordination of joint priority setting and matching industry funding continues as a basic philosophy of the Viticulture Consortium, the industry and CSREES.

Regional Programs
SERA 14
The Southern Extension Research Activity goup was created to facilitate coordinated research and Extension activities among university faculty and federal researchers in support of commercial viticulture in the Southeastern United States.
NE1020 : Multi-state Evaluation of Winegrape Cultivars and Clones
This research project will test the performance of clones of the major global cultivars and of new or previously neglected wine grape cultivars in the different wine grape growing regions within the U.S. This work will improve the competitiveness of U.S. grape growers and wineries by providing performance and quality information that is much needed for planting decisions.
Northwest Center for Small Fruits Research
A consortium of Oregon, Washington and Idaho Experiment Stations; USDA-ARS; and northwest grape and berry industries.
